11 Plus Exams

We support all of our students up to taking the 11 plus exam and gaining entry into the top local grammar schools.

What is the 11 Plus?

The 11 Plus is the voluntary exam taken by students at the beginning of year 6 who wish to gain entry into a grammar school or selective independant school, for entry in year 7. This exam has become extremely competitive as more students are taking the exam on a yearly basis, and so it is important for students to begin preparing for the examination well in advance of their test date.

The grammar schools in the Surrey and Sutton area are part of a consortium, which means that your child will only need to sit one set of exams. If they have been successful in that one exam, they will be eligible to apply for a group of grammar schools.

What’s included in the exam?

In the Sutton and Surrey area, examinations include two 50-minute multi-choice tests in maths and English. The content of the exams can differ from school to school, however please expect the below for the Selective Eligibility Test (SET) in this area:

  • Maths Multiple Choice
  • English Multiple Choice

Some schools may also require a second round of examinations once students have passed the first SET, so parents must ensure to fully research the schools in which they want their child to gain entrance into, to give them the best chance of passing. Many schools are now moving away from verbal and non-verbal reasoning testing, and replacing it with creative writing elements, so make sure your child is revising for the right test!

How should my child prepare?

  • Early Preparation - As with anything, the earlier you prepare, the better. Our courses start from Reception, where children begin learning key concepts of maths and English skills. Depending on your child’s individual needs and abilities, we will ensure that we provide continuous support and guidance in reaching your child’s academic potential.
  • Year 5 Preparation - The year before the exam is the most important, although students have learnt many of the concepts needed, speed, accuracy and exam preparation are key to passing the 11 Plus exam. Parch Hill provides many extra resources and sessions, which allow students to study solely on 11 Plus preparation, including monthly mock exams and intensive courses.
  • After the Exam - Although the exam may be over, it is important to keep the standard of study to a high level, especially as they will soon be making the big transition from primary to secondary school. We ensure that we provide the support and guidance needed for all students through their SATs, transition to secondary school, and further!

Choose your school

Choosing the right school for your child can determine their future success and development. That’s why we want to ensure that we provide you with all the up-to-date information regarding the local grammar and private schools in your area, to help you to make the big decision.
